Customers can order more items than I have in stock

Sorry if someone has asked this question before, I have been searching for help without finding it.

I just discovered that my customers are able to order more items than I have in stock - if I have entered "2" in the quantity field, the customer is still able to order more than 2 items.

Upon checout the customer get this message:

"Products marked with *** are out of stock.
Items not in stock will be placed on backorder."

Is there any easy way to change this? I don't want my customer to be able to order a larger quantity than what I have in stock.

I use ZenCart v.1.3.8a with the "products with attributes stock"-add-on and the Norewegian language pack.

I would be very happy if anyone could help me, or point me in the right direction for more info on this.

There's a setting in Admin - Configuration - Stock that allows checkout or not for out of stock items.

But what about marking items that are not in stock as backordered and keeping the backorder items attached to the customer - when stock comes in they get filled - should not enough stock come in or not after a specified time - the backorders should be cancelled.
