Force Attribute Selection

Hello,

I am currently using v1.3.9b with stock by attributes installed what I would like is to make it so that my customer has to select an attribute when adding to the cart. I have tried setting up an attribute called please select one which works accept for I have to give it a quantity for it to show and then it displays instock or out of stock next to it. I am really hoping someone can help me figure out whether I can do this.

Can anyone help with this or is there a way to hide one of the attributes so I could use this to force selection.
