2 for 1 discount with limitations

I am very new to this so thanks in advance for any help you can give.

I have looked through the posts here but nothing seems to exactly address this issue.

Using version 1.3.9d.

We need to set up a special where the customer gets 2 of an item when they order 1 but with the following limitations. They can get a max of 3 free (6 when ordering 3) and each customer can only get this special once (not each time they order).

The requirement "each customer can only get this special once (not each time they order)" is quite difficult to do.

I figured that would be the case. Seems it would require setting up a table with a field to keep track of the customer using the offer and a script written to process the offer and update that table.

Since I am VERY new to Zen Cart I don't have any idea how to integrate something like that into the system.

Would it be possible to use a coupon of some kind. Is there a way to limit the number of times an individual customer can use a coupon?

Yes, under the property, "uses per customer".
