Default Unable to upload media using media manager

    Hello!

I've been unable to upload .mp3 files to my /media folder using the media manager. I even set my permissions to 777 as a test, and they won't upload.

I've set .mp3 as one of the uploadable file types and I've tested files that have the .mp3 exte4nsion added and removed.

    Still doesn't work.

Any idea what I can do as a further test to debug?

    Thanks!

    If it helps:

I'm hosted by Fat Cow hosting. They don't support Zen Cart, but they do have an installer, so I'm guessing that my hosting package SHOULD allow for the upload functionality of media manager.

Also, I'm following the instruction found in this link

    https://www.zen-cart.com/tutorials/i...hp?article=119

If these are outdated or incorrect, please let me know.

    Thanks!

Must be something amuck with your hosting/server setup.
I've never had a problem with that in v1.3.8a.

Granted, if you're just setting up a new shop, you're better advised to use the latest version of Zen Cart, instead of the old version you've got which also has known security vulnerabilities.

I have problems myself with larger size mp3 files, they will never upload. Maybe there is an upload size limit?

Hey, Dr. Byte. Thanks for the advice.

I uploaded the new version of Zen Cart into a /demo directory, and I was having the same problems. It turned out to that the permissions on my hosted server were screwed up.

So now, I'm able to upload using the new version of Zen Cart (1.3.9) in the /demo folder but not using 1.3.8a in the main directory.

Due to technical problems, my store has no products, sales or content. The only thing it has are the page designs which I don't want to lose.

I read the three easy steps to upgrading zen cart

    https://www.zen-cart.com/tutorials/i...hp?article=108

but I'm hoping that there might be an easy solutions, such as deleting the old version of Zen Cart, uploading the new version of Zen Cart, and then uploading just the older css and files that control the look and feel of the site (as it exists today).

My question: would the method I described above be advisable, or should I just perform the upgrade as recommended in the link I included?

Here's a link to my store:

    Thanks!

OK, I just used winmerge to move my original 1.3.8a files (on the left of the winmerge interface) to the new 1.3.9 files (on the right of the winmerge interface) and it did the eaxct opposite - the original files were erased and the new files were placed in their stead. Fortunately, I have the original files on my server.

My assessment at this point is that there is no easy or reasonably safe way to upgrade Zen Cart without taking a day off of work to devote to the process.

Dr. Byte, you mentioned security problems with 1.3.8a. How serious are these? Considering the upgraded process, a few minor bugs might acceptable than destroying my site through an esoteric upgrade method if there are easier fixes.

    Thanks!

That was kind of a petulent response. If you plan on taking this project seriously, and expect others to as well, you will definitely need a mentor for your communication style.

If you re-read what I wrote I used the term "unexpectedly" in reference to the amount of time and money your customers may "unexpectedly" get into with an upgrade. Considering the fact you warned me of security issues with my current version, I can't imagine you'd expect me not to take your advice.

Look, I don't intend to get into an argument with you. If you look at the other free products on the market, you can see that upgrades are a bit easier. That's all I'm trying to communicate. If you'd like to make your good product even better (and certainly more attractive to non-technical business owners) you might want to make the upgrade process more quick and easy.

If you did so, you could even charge for the product. Honestly, I'd be willing to fork over a couple of hundred bucks to not have to go through this. Considering my salary, and the amount of time I've spent discussing this with you, it's already cost money.

This isn't blog software, it's business software. You have to think and communicate accordingly.

    ThomasT,
Your points are noted. We've heard them all before, some with a "i'm saying this to help you" bent, and others with an "i'm here to complain because I know better" bent. Many masquerade as each other. All of them consume time out of my salary too. It costs me money to spend time writing the software you get from me for free, as well as supporting the problems you encounter including those caused by your hosting company and not my software.
Nevertheless, we know the pain points well. And evidently you've not been around here long enough to know that a new version is in the works which is a complete overhaul of everything, with a view to making it easier to use in all kinds of ways, including upgrading.
That said, yes, you'll have a big upgrade to do where you *will* have to "redo" your whole site. But the actual work to be done will be a lot simpler, and future upgrades much easier, because the new code is much more modular and way more efficient.

Just like upgrades to your PC operating system and all the application software that runs on it, sometimes you have to plan for big upgrades. It's a fact of life.
Well, you do still have the choice to *not* upgrade ... you just have to live with the consequences. Same with your website software.

As you say, blog software isn't business software like ecommerce software is. As such, there are different complexities and sometimes corresponding undesirable differences ... and sometimes that means you might have an upgrade to your ecommerce engine that's more difficult to do than simple upgrades to your blog.

I hope you understand the view from this side of the desk.

Either way, I wish you well with your ecommerce business. :)
