Default Error Core Files in File Manager

If this is not where I need to post this thread, please be so kind to let me know where would be the best place so I can receive help with the following issue:

I have 9 different core files in the main folder on the server and I wasn't sure what or where they came from, therefore I contacted my host provider and they told me "Core files are created for the php errors that your site is generating".

I had ask if these files were from the errors the SSL were throwing out due to a image that was not as https...that was corrected,,,but they tell me that would not had caused the core files I am seeing.

My question is: How can I check what caused these core files and correct the issues??

I am still running version 1.3.8a on this site...thought I'd wait until version 2 is finalized before I upgrade. I have installed patches along the way. Site was installed Jan 2010.

The site seems to be running slow and not really sure what I need to do to make the site speed up. Here is the site I am inquiring about CLICK HERE

    Thank you for your help.

Not sure what you mean by 'core' files', but if they're error log files, the contents should tell you what the site is doing wrong, if anything. How are these files named ?

    You might also install this:

    http://www.zen-cart.com/index.php?ma...roducts_id=860

and check the logs it creates (if any).

Your site is a little slow, but I can't see anything on it that would cause that.

    Thanks for your reply.

What I mean by core files is they are named core.21615 and showing as a text file. Each one has a different number behind the core.##### and the are in the root folder.

I did not know what they were either, however, the hosting provider stated they were php errors with the script. He said I could delete them. I opened one up and all it shows is symbols...I will try to open them up in a different way and report my findings here.

Concerning the slowness of the site...you think disabling the main category product images might help the speed out somewhat? There's really no reason to have them there other than cosmetic...just another step a customer will have to take in order to view the actual products. Looks good...but I am thinking this is the reason (the images) are making the site run slower than it should.

I would think that those "core" files could create security concerns if left on the server, and you should ask them to turn that core-dump setting off, at least for your account. I'm pretty sure that having that on causes your host to fail PCI Compliance requirements. If your hosting is claiming to be PCI-compliant, I would ask them about the coredump files. Or ask your PCI Scanning company about it.

    Thanks Dr. Byte...

I will contact them now and request to have this function turned off. I have isolated the files from the root folder, however, this needs to be removed now. Thanks again.

They (HostGator) tells me they cannot disable this function not unless I have VPS or a dedicated server. Whats up with that??

I was also informed they are PCI Compliant and sent me a link to read.

now what?? I guess I'll just have to keep an eye open for this on that site.

When I opened one of these files, I scanned it with eye view to see if there was anything in this I could try to get an idea of what this is from and I seen this as a part of a link (I do not want to put the whole link here) /index.php

Does this mean errors on that page?

If you're talking about "core" files still, don't try to post them here. There's nothing we can do about those here. But if they keep reappearing, tell your host about them and ask them to figure out why they keep appearing.
You can start by using this debug-logging system to figure out if or what fixable PHP errors are happening on your site: https://www.zen-cart.com/tutorials/index.php?article=82

If you're talking about something else, I'm afraid I don't understand what you're asking.

Ok. Don't be concerned. I won't post them here. I will continue to watch the site for these type of files.

    Thanks for your help.
