3 digit country ISO codes

Can someone tell me if the 3 digit ISO code is needed when adding a new country in Zen Cart?
For example, Royal Mail has Madeira listed as a separate country in the EU but it isn't listed as a country in Zen Cart (I'm not sure if anyone would actually specify Madeira or if they'd put their country address as Portugal)
I can find a 2 digit ISO code for Madeira but not a 3 digit one.
Will it cause any problems if I add a country but leave the 3 digit ISO code blank?

Many payment and shipping modules use that information for validating transaction details and/or validating customer addresses.
If you don't supply it, then anything that looks for it, such as some shipping modules and payment modules, will not find it and thus won't be able to do any intended mapping, and thus the related functionality may be broken.
It's up to you and how you intend to use it.
