Layout Settings>Bread Crumbs Navigation Separator> place the html for the image source in this field:

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<img src="http://url/images/imagename.gif" align="absmiddle" width="10" height="31">&nbsp;&nbsp;


The &nbsp; is to give it spacing.

You may want to change the reference to:
"http://url/images/imagename.gif"

and use:
"/images/imagename.gif"

this will allow it to work on secure and non-secure pages ...
