Default Confused On Where To Install At Hosting Company

Hi everyone.. I hope you experienced- been there - done that folks can help.. I've scoured the forums- the internet- everywhere- everything- and just can't find a simple answer...

I have GoDaddy Hosting.. * i know- people are making faces * but- it has been great for me so far.. First things first- I've been building sites in dreamweaver and frontpage since time begain- and this is my first excursion into the world of ecommerce- but is a much needed change...

Okay!! I have one hosting account- named kanikis.com, which is where all 8 of my websites/domains reside...

I had Godaddy install the latest version of Zencart for me- but what I ended up doing- was putting it in the main html root category of kanikis.com. I need to able to use zencart's shopping cart system on one of my domain - websites!! and that one is justforkeeps.net...

SOooo- do I just copy over the zencart folder into my justforkeeps folder/domain? or should I start over- and reinstall the whole thing- with a whole new database etc... to my justforkeeps folder/domain area....

Thank you to those that can help- and I'm sorry if this is a long drawn out question- and/or a repeat one at that!!

    Blessings...

Perhaps you didn't scour the Tutorials/FAQ for "move directory" or "move site".

Actually- I did "scour" them- but in this forum- you can search and read for days... I found answers- but was still a bit unclear!!! There are many ways of moving- installing- etc. etc.. And depending on the host- the domains and how things are set up. That's why I posted here!! Was really hoping someone has Godaddy- and went through this already...

Thanks!! Will just keep looking... Thought I'd be able to get a little more help in the "community" versus searching and searching... And then doing it wrong... Want to start out right- from the beginning...

Onward and forward.... Will do more digging- or just do a fresh install into the directory I think I am supposed to put it in...

    Blessings!!

    Well....
I could either give you some bad information that MIGHT work.

    Or....
Point you in the right direction.

I think I did the latter. If you choose not to do it that way, it is of course your choice.

Too often, we try to quickly help and leave out some "little step" that we automatically do without thinking. Sending someone to the actual directions is always the better option and helps others "scouring" as well.

If there is some item there that you don't quite get, post as to the specific step for clarification. That helps everyone.

No thanks on the "Bad" directions I think that would make this even more confusing...

Okay.. I will try this again- as I think I am confusing what my actual goal is... Or just not "saying" it right...

I did find articles that you suggested- on moving to another directory. However.... I want to be sure I am doing the right thing- and that this is actually what I need to do..

Soooo- a more direct question would be is:

In order for zen cart to work on my website- justforkeeps.net- which is hosted in my main hosting account- kanikis.com, do I need to install zencart in a subfolder in my domain folder justforkeeps??? Or will it still work with justforkeeps- if I leave zencart and all of its files, folders and permissions- in the main hosting root web directory- kanikis.com...

Sorry!!! This is just the confusing part... The articles I found- all geared towards installing zencart in ONE domain... or root folder- where in my situation- I have many sites in one hosting account..

I am SURE I am missing something- so any "hints" will not be considered Wrong or misleading...

Thanks again for even replying back!!! I may just be way overtired- and need to watch cartoons and eat cheerios at this point- instead of codes and scripts!!

    Blessings

This is sort of like asking us which shelf the cheerios should go on

But... You will need to first decide which directory on you main site is the result when you enter justforkeeps.net in a browser. If it is kanikis.com/just, AND you do NOT want to use a subdirectory like store, you would move your files to kanikis.com/just.

Once you decide which directory to use, follow the steps you find in the tutorial.

Just wanted to post an update- in case some others come in- and have GoDaddy- and shared hosting...

I finally got everything installed- and now is ready for complete customization...

If you have GoDaddy Hosting- and have one hosting account- with many domains. What I ended up doing was going to my account in GoDaddy. I opened up my hosting control panel- went to godaddy hosting connections- and chose to have them install zen cart- and create my database for me.

In this process- I had them upload to my main hosting directory and then into my folder where my main shopping site is kept...

so- it was like this: -http:/ /kanikis.com/ justforkeeps - Sorry about the spaces- didn't want it to actually come up as a link.. Just to show an example...I chose kanikis.com- as it is my primary hosting- and justforkeeps is the folder in which I needed zen cart to be put in- directly in it's root. NOW- we finally have it- and I am good to go!!

One thing I found- that I think is kewl- is that I can leave my existing site right in that same folder- and it still functions. Why? Because- with a windows server- the index.htm takes precedence over the index.php of zencart- so I actually can work on re-creating my site in zencarts control panel- while still leaving my current site live.. When ready- I have no need to move the zencart site to another directory- as all I have to do- is move my old sites contents to a new folder somewhere else.. Then- the zencart site will take over....

Anyway!! Just wanted to share- and thank dbltoe for trying to help earlier..

NOW- on to the fun part.. Figuring the rest of my new zen store out!! Customizing- and getting my products switched over... Found great help on here- and tutorials galore on the net..

What a difference - going from hand coded sites in dreamweaver to using an online ecommerce, data driven database site.. Whew!! A learning curve yes- am I soooo looking forward to it- yes!!

Thanks guys.. hope this helps someone else too.. :)

    Blessings!!!

There's no way you can have two instances of Zen Cart in one root folder. Just like trying to park two tanks in the same parking space!

Two carts in one directory would require two admin/includes/cofigure.php (for starters) or one of a lot of coding. Last time I looked, even windows can't get two files with different settings to occupy one filename.

Don't know how GoneDaddy loaded your files, but, if you don't have an install directory, you won't be able to upgrade the old database when you're done upgrading. This generally happens with a Fantastico load.

You may need to get a little more involved in the process than pouring the cheerios in the bowl and adding milk.

You're going to need to separate the cheerios from the honey-nut cheerios and see what needs to be put in the bowl from the old cheerios bowl.

Okay- again... My cereal bowl is not overloaded :) Everything is fine- and functional... The zencart is loaded into my justforkeeps folder (domain) where my current site is residing... Because I have not removed the current sites folders and files ( which were created in html etc. through dreamweaver)- I have both the zencart site- and my old- old fashioned site in one folder.... I've already gone through EVERYTHING... Did a whole new reload- and even got some tech help from a godaddy rep.. Just to make sure I was doing what I was supposed to be doing... It's all good as far as I can tell...

I have had no problems accessing both my index.php for the zencart, no problems accessing the cpanel so I can get moving on this whole new makeover using zencart, and no problems still viewing my original dreamweaver site created and running live now...

In order for my zencart to kick in- and be "the site".... I am still able to just leave the original webpages right where there are...
I'm thinking you misunderstood what i posted...

There are NOT two carts loaded into one site (domain)... Zencart is loaded and then there is my old fashioned dreamweaver bult site- coded with paypal buttons.. Not ecommerce like zen... Just folders and html files....

Soooo- the two are not clashing..

My database for the zen cart is on mysql- and the zencart itself is in root folder of justforkeeps...

When I get my site built- through zencart's cpanel- etc.... Then all I have to do- is cut out all old website files- and paste them into a new folder- to store them..

Because Dreamweaver- etc. uses html.. My current website is index.htm.. Whereas zencart has an index.php.. They do not clash- rather- the index.htm takes a higher precedence over the index.php- so zencarts homepage won't show up unless you type it's exact url into the addy bar- or I delete and/or remove all old website folders and files....

No honeynut and regular cheerios in this bowl.. Can't even compare apples to apples here because what is in the domain/directory are two whole different kinds of foods!!!

And by the way... You're making me hungry....
