Cross Sell Module Layout Problem When Only 2 Items

For some reason the cross-sell module has product listing issues when there are only 2 items. When there are 3 or more cross-sell items it displays in rows just fine however, there there are only 2 products it displays one on top of the other rather than in rows. How do I fix this?

I'd also like to find out how to position the layout so that when there is only 1 cross sell item it aligns to the left rather than in the middle.
