coupons are attached to customers?

Sorry this should be clear but somehow it's not... When I make a coupon, does each coupon have to be attached to a customer id? Or can I make a coupon with a particular item in the shop, with discounted price, and just give that to a prospective customer who has not made an account yet?

Discount Coupons are not customer specific ...

You can create a Discount Coupon and set it for how many uses it can have based on:
Total Coupon Uses
Per Customer Coupon Uses

You can also set Time limits on the Discount Coupon and Restrict Zones on who can use the Discount Coupon ...

Once made, there are further Restriction that you can set for Categories and/or Products that the Discount Coupon is valid for ...
