multiple postage discount

Hi my 1st post here and i've had my shop on-line for 24hrs
its brill well done

but i need some advice pls
i have managed to do the varying postal prices by doing the weight thing ok

but my 1st customer bought 5 of the same items and was charged postage 5 times
they haven't said anything but it was a small item and it worked out at £3 and only cost me 80p

is there a way to offer multiple postage?

same as if someone buys 1 item and then 1 other item from a dif catergory i'd like it to give cheaper postage as you can bag it all together obviously

hi have it set as the weight thing so i can charge dif postage for dif items

Hi what i would like is
item 1 is 60p P+P for 1
but if the bought 3 it would only be 60p P+P still
and then item 2 wud be £2 P+P but
if they bought 3 it wud be say £3 P+P in total
once i know how to set it up in can change it around if needed

i'm not actually sure how much postage will be yet
as i haven't got all my products yet

Weight should charge for total order weight not per item ordered

i set up the weight unit because in the faq section i followed the instructions
it said about turning off the weight thing so it would charge dif postage for dif items
which is what i want
but as i said for some reason it charges it per item which is good if customers are only buying 1 thing

i have been reading about tables etc
but it's all quite confusing to a newbie

and i also looked at the royal mail module as i'm based in the uk
but alot of my website members are worldwide so i don't think i can use that
plus i don't want to offer dif postal services like next day, 2 day etc
i just want to post it

You will have to determine the costs you require but I will try to outline what needs done for the "table rate" shipping module


Table

1:0.50,5:0.75,10:1.5,15:2.5,20:4.75

Table Method
weight

Handling Fee
Average cost for packaging
£0.25

So to capture shipping for what you stated and I am guessing your costs

Small item 1 ordered and you need £0.75 to ship 1 and it weighs 1 weight unit - - - this includes packaging
From table a weight of 1 will be £0.5 + handling fee of £0.25

small item X 5
From table - 5 units is £0.75 + £0.25 handling fee

For your special item that I take it you have due to how you initially set this up you can give it a weight of say 20 and you want to charge £5.00 to ship it
From table
20 weight units is £4.75 + £0.25 handling fee

You can expand table as you require and alter cost per unit of weight, change product weights to what is required to ship etc

ok so hopefully if item 1 which is small
50p postage in total
and for 2 would be 60p
3=70p
and for item 2 bigger things
postage would be
£2.00 in total
and £1 for each extra item
2=£3
3=£4
5=£6

it would read
1:0.10,5:0.50,10:1.0,20:2.0,30:3.0

handling can be done for each item?
or has it got to be the same?
so can i out handling for item 1 @ 40p
and item 2 @ £1

or have i got to put item 2's weight in as 15 so it would work out at £2.90 which is fine

sounds complicated but i suppose once i get used to how it works it'll be easy

what other changes to the admin have i got to make please

ok so its worked sort of
apart from when you check out it now gives u 2 options
1 is 'per unit' and that says 'best way' = £2.10

2 is 'table rate' and that says 'best way'=90p
so the table rate is what i want but it seems a funny thing to be called

and how do i get rid of the per unit thing and change the words best way to UK delivery
