upgrading from 1.3.8a to 1.3.9a database help!

My current zencart and database version
Zen Cart 1.3.8a
Patch: 1::
Database Patch Level: 1.3.8
upgrading to;
Zen Cart 1.3.9g
Database Patch Level: 1.3.9g

Ok so im trying to update to the latest version of zen cart and database, but what i would like to do is obviously take my database with me, well at least the data from the table. but when doing this with trails im coming to the problem of restoring the databse. Im either getting errors from the sql or i get the errors saying i need to update my database within the zen admin area.

I have done a complete fresh install of the new version.
I have had no problem with updating the site and adding my own customizations.

What i am asking is this possible and how do i go about it if so?

do a complete proper db backup and import into new db
Re-run zc_install and upgrade db only

thanks this has worked on my testing server and will try live soon but still need to make a few updates, thanks though.
