Change the position of the search box

Hi,
I am trying to change the position of the search box. Currently the search box is in the left column inside side boxes. I want to get it in the header area. I tried to use the require function with the tpl_search.php unsure: file in it, inside the tpl_header.php. It would not work .
Can any one suggest me how i should approach this.

admin > tools > layout box controller > turn off sidebox/search
turn on sidebox/search header
