Tax Calculation Issues

I'm having an issue with the tax calculations on my site and cannot seem to grasp where the problem is. Hopefully some smart person can shed a little light on this for me....

Here is my configuration:

Admin>Config>My Store>Country - United States
Admin>Config>My Store>Zone - Michigan
Admin>Config>My Store>Basis of Product Tax - Billing
Admin>Config>My Store>Basis of Shipping Tax - Billing
Admin>Config>Cust Details>State - True
Admin>Locations/Taxes>Zone Definitions - California
Admin>Locations/Taxes>Zone Definitions - Michigan
(both zones definitions have taxes defined - green dot)
Admin>Locations/Taxes>Tax Rates - Michigan 6%
Admin>Locations/Taxes>Tax Rates - California 8.25%
(both are defined for taxable goods tax class)
Admin>Locations/Taxes>Tax Classes - Taxable Goods(only class)

The problem I am having is this.... If a customer in Alabama makes a purchase, no tax is calculated(as appropriate), but if a customer in either Michigan or California makes a purchase, BOTH tax rates are added(14.25%)... A customer in California should only be charged 8.25% and a customer in Michigan should only be charged 6%(obviously!)....

What have I done wrong in my configuration? Any input would be appreciated.

Go to the Zone Definition for California ...

Click on Details ...

What do you have set for the:
Country
Zone

Click on Tax Rates ...

How many definitions are under this Tax Rate? It should just show California and the rate ...

Click on Details ...

What do you have set for the:
Country
Zone

Click on Tax Rates ...

How many definitions are under this Tax Rate? It should just show Michigan and the rate ...

Zone Definitions for California:

Country - united states
Zone - California

Zone Definitions for Michigan:

Country - united states
zone - Michigan

However..... when i click on tax rates for each one, both tax rates are listed..... should I delete the ones that i dont want for that particular zone definition? I was under the "assumption" that it would chose the tax rate based on the zone name and tax class rate name, or does it sort it by definition? Maybe i'm just confused.. lol

Yes, only have the Tax Rate for the individual Zone Definition or it will charge both ...

Thanks for the update that you were able to fix your tax issues by cleaning up your Zone Definitions and Tax Rates set on them ...
