help installing a testimonials module

i'm trying to install this module:

and i've followed the instructions, but when i go to tools/layout boxes controller, the testimonials box doesn't show up.

i'm currently running 1.3.9.d, and i know i need to update my version (another thing i'm scared to do) but is this the cause of my issue?

my site was built by someone else, and they did a great job of it, but i have more work that needs to be done and i just can't afford to spend more money on it. they installed a bunch of modules and made a custom template specifically for my site, and everything works fine now, i just need to make some tweaks.

i know i haven't provided much information, but any help would be appreciated...

Your Zencart version wouldn't make a difference.

The most common cause of mods not working, especially when something you expect to see doesn't appear, is uploading the files without changing the folders named YOUR_TEMPLATE to the name of your custom template. I'd check that first, especially in includes/modules/sideboxes.
