Problem restoring database backup

I'm following the instructions for upgrading, but am stuck on Step 3. Where it says to restore your database from the backup. I have gone to phpMyAdmin and tried to import the backup database into the new one I created, but now I'm getting an error message when trying to access the admin panel. I'm assuming I wasn't supposed to import the backup the way I did. Can anyone tell me what I should do for this step?

I'm struggling with bringing my old database over to 1.3.9h. How do I do that? I've tried through myphpAdmin, but I messed something up.

Thanks, I've read those tutorials and have the database backup ready to go.

Does the database I'm importing into have to be 'empty' (i.e. no tables, etc)?

1146 Table 'provide7_zenc.zenc_project_version' doesn't exist

[select * from zenc_project_version WHERE project_version_key = 'Zen-Cart Database' ]
