Create attribute for unique user values

I have not seen this topic among the 12 or 13 pages of the FAQs I searched. Our version is 1.3.8 with no add-ons.

I need to add an attribute for square footage in order for customers to input how much flooring they want to order. Originally, I created a text attribute but couldn't figure out how to multiply the inputted value against the price to get the total price for the order. What kind of attribute can be created that a customer can input a value that gets multiplied against a specific price? Any suggestions?
