My hosting company block all outgoing communication from scripts on the the server. I'll think this generate a timeout when I try and login to admin. Login takes about 30 sec. Who is Zen Cart script communicating with?

Try switching Admin - Configuration - My Store - Show if version update available to False.
Won't that policy mess with your shipping and payment modules ?

You're going to have serious problems handling shipping quotes and doing payment processing if your server can't do outbound communications.
