    Default (bad) Idea... upgrade packs

i know this wouldn't work for everyone but i think its a good idea and might save people loads of time...

I find that i seem to upgrade my zencarts hen a week or so later a new upgrade comes out... and id like to thank the developers for being on the ball with changes and upgrade etc... only problem i have is that is i seem to spend hours reading the change logs.. coping each changed file to a new folder and then uploading and replacing the changed files...

i thought it might be a good idea to have download of just the changed files as an upgrade pack.. so users could just download the changed fils in the correct file structure and ftp and forget basically.

If ive missed these and therte already available please point me in the right direction...

    just an idea..

Sounds too good to be true.

What if you have module installed that affect the updated files?what if you have custom work done on your site? how can the developer work around all these questions.

I see you been using Zen Cart for years you should remember the last major update was released almost 3 years ago which meant you didn't have to upgrade anything in the past 2.5 years.

I think the 1.39 hasn't been bug free due to the urgency in it's release to take care of the security and PCI issues that a lot of store owner have been dealing with.

Don't forget that 2.0 is still being developed and that would use a different structure which hopefully will be more secure and won't need updating as much.

    Just my opinion.

I agree (mostly) with CoolCarPartsOnline. Upgrade packs would most likely create a false sense of security and actually encourage people to skip key steps necessary to ensure that their Zen Cart will play nicely with add-ons and any custom code.

Don't completely agree with the bit about Zen Cart being rushed and not bug free. Any suggestion that an app of this size and complexity could be "bug free" is rather unrealistic, and a new release of code, every 3-6 weeks is entirely normal - rather than evidence that the releases are being rushed.

Zen Cart's add-on system was ahead of most apps in its day. the override system went a long way towards separating changes from core code in the places that really mattered.

For 2.0, it was announced some time back that there would be a plugin system. This is really something to look forward to as that will hopefully separate completely added code from plugins and make upgrading heaps easier.
