Well, to be fair, the problem with my NEW install was with the server and the fact that it was running an older version of php (definitely something that would have been nice to know ahead of time), but the problem with the old one was not. The best we can come up with is that it was simply an unfortunate - but not all that unexpected - side-effect of continued patching over a few years.
