    Default (6) Couldn't resolve host 'www.paypal.com'

I'm using the built-in PayPal website payments standard module. I went through the configuration steps recommended on this site and the forum to set up my Zen admin and paypal to use the proper return url, PDT, website payment preferences, etc. It all looks good.

When customers pay with paypal, we get the money but the order doesn't get listed in the Zencart admin. Something is wrong with the IPN or cURL setup. We are on a VPS with StartLogic. Their support says that ports 80 and 443 are open. They said there was a problem with the SSL (missing CA certificate) which I added, but this did not fix the problem.

The curltester and IPN results are here:

    http://www.shinetrim.com/extras/ipncheck.php
    http://www.shinetrim.com/extras/curltester.php

Any help would be most appreciated. Even if it's just to name the problem so I can tell the hosting company what to change.

We are on a VPS with StartLogic.
First check for curl in admin > tools > server/version info

Look for section on Configure Command and if curl is present as or similar to:
    with-curl=/opt/curlssl/

And a section titled "curl" for
    cURL support enabled

If not present or enabled might need to recompile php with curl support

The first part I can't find. I do see curl.ini mentioned here:

    additional .ini files parsed /etc/php4/apache2/conf.d/curl.ini, /etc/php4/apache2/conf.d/domxml.ini, /etc/php4/apache2/conf.d/gd.ini, /etc/php4/apache2/conf.d/imap.ini, /etc/php4/apache2/conf.d/mysql.ini

For the second part I see:

    curl
    CURL support enabled
    CURL Information libcurl/7.15.5 OpenSSL/0.9.8c zlib/1.2.3 libidn/0.6.5

    Thanks for helping out.

This is the error message you need to give to your server administrator:

    (6) Couldn't resolve host 'www.paypal.com'
Apparently the server hasn't been configured to know how to do ns lookups so that it can talk to external webservers.

Thanks Doc. Unfortunately the hosting tech support has not been that helpful. I did some more searching and poking about on Google based on what you said.

It appears I need to edit the resolv.cnf file in the /etc/ directory on the webserver? It currently reads:

    Code:
    nameserver 127.0.0.1
I am a little unsure what the correct contents should be. I've been searching and reading like mad but haven't seen anything conclusive. Something like

    search shinetrim.com
    nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
    nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

I guess the nameserver would be the ip address of the server?

And ps, thanks to both you guys for your ideas and help.

I didn't change anything and for some strange reason, the testers are giving success messages now. I just checked out of curiosity not expecting them to work...

Well, this is bizarre... transactions are working now. Nothing was changed except rebooting the server.

It turns out this had been a problem several times in the past month with curl not working intermittently. Might be time to find a new host.

And, just like that, curl stopped working. Reboot server in Plesk. curl works again...

Sounds like you need a more reliable hosting server.

I am looking forward to making that happen. I would not recommend StartLogic for zencart hosting. Unless you like upsetting your customers and not getting paid!
