Upgrade and overide system question...

Hello, I'm going to attempt to upgrade my site without breaking it! I just wanted to get a few things clear.

I will need to compare the changed files against my current files. If I had made any modifications I will need to incorporate them into the updated files and upload?

Are these the only files that I will need to worry about?

And the override system. I see a folder in my cart for overrides, is this where I'm supposed to be placing my customized files? I have been following the CAPITAL TEMPLATE system and just adding my customized files to this. Am I doing this right?

Modifications should only be in files placed into folders named for your template.....Then of these, only those that have a new version will require you attention....
If there has not been a change in the core file you need to do nothing to your custom file

And if not in the tutorial, the RULE is any folder where there exists a "classic" folder - - the files there can be overridden

Thanks again Kobra. Thanks for the note on the "classics" folder, I don't even glance at those files...

And the CAPITAL TEMPLATE I was referring to I guess is the same as the override system. Anytime I have a modified file I copy it into my template folder. So I guess I've been doing okay.

One more question, how are my mods affected? Do I need to check for compatibility or anything before I upgrade? Thank you.

Yes - - And hopefully if it has files that new versions were made, it has been upgraded
You can check for this in the downloads area
Otherwise, you might have to see if the files included in the module also appear in the change log

It would be wise to check each mod's support thread for info on compatibility with the latest version. You can also read the thread on "Mods compatible with v1.3.9", though I don't know if it has been thoroughly updated for v1.3.9h.
Lastly, you can compare the file list for each mod with the changelogs for Zen Cart to see if any mod files have been touched.

One more question...what about defaults that come with zen-cart. Shipping/payment options, music, genre, records, etc. These would be files that I would never have the use for.

Yes and mos well constructed modules have folders named "my_template" that you must rename to your template name

Remember the RULE??

/classes has no "classic" folder - - most do not touch those files but if you do I suggest you adopt placing some word or phrase in the commented head of the file

That way, when an upgrade is in order these files that can not be overridden can all be located using the dev tool kit and searching for "kobra" & now I have a list of the files I have touched in addition to those that are in overrides folders

I would not - - The complete default files set is only about 20K so there is little economy in this area
