404 Page Not Found, zen cart generating 10

This installation of 1.3.9d is bi lingual. It has over the last 3 weeks generated about ten (10) 404s, all product or category pages which Google sees as a broken link. My question is

how does zen cart generate a 404? For instance one of the broken links is to a category that doesn't exist, and never has. I have def. NOT written that link in anywhere in the code, and have just done a site search to make sure. So how does zen cart make up a category, and put a link to it somewhere so that Google trips over it?

The language ids then triple the number of 404s naturally so the client sees 30 404s instead of the actual 10.

Do you have any add-ons/modules installed? In particular any add-ons that rewrite URLs?

Your Google Webmaster Tools should be telling you where those pages triggering 404 are coming from. Most likely from outside your site.
