I want to set up zen cart to not display any products on the store front. Then I want to set it up to use registered members, and then they can see the products I have available. My question is can zen cart do the tasks I need?

Not as standard, but it's a fairly easy thing to achieve with a couple of lines of PHP. Due to the init_includes structure of the Zen, you'll be able to add the code to one place, and then apply it to the whole site.
