I'm havng the same problem, and I've read through the sticky thread that is listed on this subject in the setting up attributes and products subheading in this forum. I am wondering where to upload the ebook that I'm trying to set up as a downloadable product. I don't have a download file in my cpanel file manager. Should I create a new file by that name in my file manager?
Lots of good info in the Tutorials/FAQ section (link above):

I have got this working now and the answer is as stevesh says, in the tutorials. The problem that i have is that trying to get to the information that is needed from the tutorials can be quite a task in itself. Thanks to all of the people that have responded to this issue. nbtone, i would baffle the hell out of you if i was to try to describe what to do and i dont want to confuse you further. what i will say is that i had to play with it a little in order to completely get it set up for my circumstances. instead of relying on people who you no doubt pay to do this sort of thing, why not try and learn a little (if possible without ruining your website) by playing with things. I have set up several test sites so that if I screw things up i can look at it with absolute discust before shrugging my shoulders and saying to myself 'well.... i screwed that up well and good. But at least i havent messed up my real site'. its worth having a go. for every 10 mistakes that i make (and thats an understatement to make it sound like i really know what the hell i am doing) i get 1 thing going good. it is the best way to learn through experimenting. END OF LECTURE AND GOOD LUCK!!! :-)
I guess if someone else is able to finally get it to work I'll try it myself. I had the website people put some pdf files on the website before, and I'm going to try putting these new files in the same place and go from there. Thanks for the lecture, nonetheless.:>(
