additional image must be same extension

Has anyone noticed that the additional images must be the same image type/extension (jpg, gif, etc) as the main image?

I had a jpg as the main image and wanted gifs for additional images. It wouldn't work. Filenames were right; directories were right, etc. In fact, I use Image Handler, so it took care of all that. It just wouldn't work until I made the main and additional images all the same in terms of image type (jpg, gif, etc).

Is this the default zen cart behavior, or does it have something to do with Image Handler?
