fresh install, pricing doesnt work!! help!

OK! Holy nOOb here, but I just cannot understand what is going wrong.

zen-cart version 1.3.9h
date of install - like two weeks ago
server - Hostgator - linux
PHP Version 5.2.15

I have done NOTHING to zencart yet. well, kinda, but not anything close to what I am dealing with.

I have only one category.
I am setting up ONE (count it, one) product.
just one
and whenever I am trying to set a price to it, (eg - 2.99) it REFUSES to take. I keep everything simple in setting up this product, no for pricing with attributes and all that. but when I hit "preview" for the item, it always states it's 0 (that's a big fat ZERO) for the price.
I really don't get it. I have spent over two days searching for reasons that this could happen until now I am bowing before you all to tell me where I have gone wrong.

No adjustments have been made to any files, no extra configuring to other areas that I can think of.

please tell me that others have had this problem and theres a setting that I have overlooked.

Upon further research, i see that "my store">store status is set to 0 = normal store. Should i need to change that to 2 = showcase with prices?

wow... even tried creating a whole new category called testing just to see if that would make a difference, and even when I try to add a product there, with a simple price of 3.59, it still comes back showing a ZERO.

but here's the extra kick-in-the-head-with-a-steel-toed-boot... if I go into price manager and bring that product up, it will SHOW the price to be edited, .... HUH???

No "0" is correct, Maybe another setting you are missing,
store address?
or screenshot of the settings used?

not sure that the store address is really a factor in my pricing problems. I am not applying any taxes on it. I am planning on making my one or two items a downloadable product, but I cannot even get that far yet since I cannot even apply a pricing to the original product add page.
I am locating the store virtually in mexico, but that shouldn't be the issue...

I dont have it available to show yet (or more like I don't want to show it yet...) ... it still has all the fresh install wording in it, like what templates to alter etc.

I literally have a demo product that I am using for testing purposes (a small MP3) of which I am going to set up as a downloadable product (via re-direct), but I haven't even got as far as setting attributes yet since I cannot even initially set a price. i don't want to go the next step of setting up attributes until I get this stupid price thing resolved.

and i have two identical products (both for testing, one was with a bit of attributes played with, the second was just straight up clean add of product... and it STILL will not show the price... still just has a 0 (Zero) for it's price.

OK!!!!.... here's another REAL KICKER!
I went and got the book for zen-cart... and here I am going through the process on creating a new product, etc. and there was one different configuration that I was not choosing, of which making it a TAXABLE GOOD, and even giving it a ship weight (hey, for testing purposes)...
with a price of 200.00....

....

And it STILL shows as ZERO for it's price in the preview!!!!

WTF!!???!!!
I am really starting to think that this software is full of and it really is a very bad program if one cannot even simply get even a vitual test product up.!!!!

it can be a bit on the ing side at times but what isnt... prob turn out to be something simple,
hang in there someone will come up with it.. we are thinking! lol

The first thing I see is that it is not showing the price as 0 as such because that would come out as $0.00, and there isnt even a $ or£ symbol... mmmm
