    Default Newbie Question

Hi I know I am a total newbie here and this is a newbie question BUT... I have had a hard time with getting a website up. I payed alot for a premium web builder, sort of a step by step hold your hand type thing, Anyway that didn't work and I wasted alot of time ( I did get a refund though) so thats why I am asking this

I am reading and working off of "e-Start Your Web Store with Zen Cart" by Hoek. An awesome book BTW but here is my issue. I am literally working my way through it and it has occurred to me that downloading all of the zencart stuff on my own pc as described in chapter 1 might be counterproductive if I have to somehow transfer this information to my hosting site as I have already installed zencart there before I started reading this book. I don't want to read ahead to the end because I have a tendency to get distracted.

Heres the question can I redirect the zencart I have hosted to my own PC to do what Mr Hoek is recommending? That is to basically practice without it being live or am I better off just downloading all the stuff and going by the book? My fear is that I will have to do it all over again once I am done practicing. I have 100 things to list and have wasted so much time already. Any opinions would be appreciated like I said I really like this book and I want to work through it as I read it ( as opposed to reading all of it and then trying) that last one doesn't work well for me..

Anyway thanks in advance for any opinions or feedback I know I am a total newbie but hey we all have to start somewhere

    Hi,

    Welcome to Zen

When I started I developed locally as it was so much easier to backup and update files.

Moving severs is also very easy when you are ready. There's a tutorial here.

    Good luck with your site.

You can build and test your site pretty much completely on your pc (except for payment gateways), and then transfer it all including products to your live server. You will essentially overwrite what is on the server with the files and database from your pc.
