Pictures not showing up

Hi all i wasn't sure if this was the right place to post this or not, if its wrong please point me to the right area thanks!

issue - I had images for the products that were showing up for a few months and then stopped. I can' see the images in the admin area either. Not all products had images , they were linked to the default image. Images were uploaded to the data base. I have a unix server and verified that they are readable. This http://www.alarmbarn.com/images/xp-600.jpg says i have a server 500 error.

Through talking to people who i know with some web site experience said something about possibly checking the htaccess file??

I am stumped and would really appreciate any help.
