turning off categories

this is a repost.
i have tried using the support thread supported by bling themes but no one seems to be monitoring the thread.

I am running zen 1.3.9h with digital shop template.

Is there a way of turning off the categories under the slider on the main page but still retain all the sub categories images on the other pages.
I have used Admin>Configuration>Product listing>Show SubCategories on Main Page while navigating and set it to 0

this removes the catagories on the main page but then i lose the sub catagories.

feel bloody guilty that i have been unable to resolve the problem and had to repost.
any help will be very welcome.

Have you tried Configuration > Layout Settings > Categories - Always Show on Main Page?
