Index page configure not working

I've configured like this:
Show New Products on Main Page 0
Show Featured Products on Main Page 1
Show Special Products on Main Page 0
Show Upcoming Products on Main Page 0

which should enable the featured products in the one category I have to display on the front page, and they simply do NOT display. Cannot get those two products - which are enabled and active, and yes they are set to be featured - to display instead of just the category button and name on the index page. This shouldn't be diff. Any help appreciated.
