Before you make tweaks to the /classic/ files, copy them all to /your_template/ folders (whatever name you want to use), edit the template_info.php to reflect the new name, and select the custom template. Then you will always have a clean version of the Classic template to fall back on, and your custom template will be safe from being erased in an upgrade.
