displaying french characters

Wonder if anyone can help, I'm trying to use letters ë and é on an English version zen cart but can't get them to display correctly. Do I need to change something to recognise these letters or is there a code similar to &amp for displaying the & symbol that I should be using?

You could also check out http://www.w3schools.com/tags/ref_entities.asp for the html codes/symbols to use. For example, é is é
