Restrict Shipping Per Item

Running 1.3.9d, almost upgraded to h

Not sure if the built in modules can do this (using USPS and FedEx)...

Desired effect: Particular Items that cannot be sent internationally will not be allowed to be purchased if the shipping address is out of the country. (I'm currently using a read only attribute to tell them of the restriction, but if they don't pay attention the cart still allows them to purchase).

If I am not just missing an easy fix in the current modules I was also wondering if I could create a new product type for items that can't go international, or create a new field in the product table, but then what?

The best thing would be to create a new field in the products table for this, such as:
products_ship_usa_only

Then, you could test for it and enable/disable the shipping module as needed ...

That's kind of what I was thinking. Do you think it's better/easier to reject it through the shipping module or have the shopping cart deny it?

Personally, I'd add a new field to the products table ...

Then in the shipping module test to see if any products are in the cart where this is new field is set ... if so, then test the shipping address and if International you have it disable the shipping module ...

I would also use that new field on the products table to mark the Product on the product_info and shopping cart ... this will help avoid confusion ...

You could go so far as to add a message on the Add to Cart/Buy Now buttons to mark them as National or US only ...
