Countries Drop Down Box

I realise that the countries are held in a database, but what determines that the United States is the first in the drop down box?

What code changes the default order?

Go to the Configuration ... Customer Details ... and set the:

Create Account Default Country ID
Set Create Account Default Country ID to:
Default is 223
