Expanding subcategories

From what I can find searching , in order to have all subcategories displayed on the home page I need to use an addon. Seems like the mod I want would be the "Expanded Category List" but when I go to download it I see -

Version: 1.01
Last Updated: Jul 21 2008
Will it be ok to use this on a 1.3.9 site? Is there something else thats up to date that will work ? Thanks

Have you tried this...
what do you have for Configuration > Product Listing > Show SubCategories on Main Page while navigating ?

1. Should be set to 1
