I am also trying to put the text next to the image and have put this in the public_html/includes/templates/ZCT Adult and Lingerie 16/css/stylesheet.css:

#categoryImgListing {
clear: right;
}

#categoryDescription {
text-align: left;
clear: right;

}

but its not picking it up

The question needs more context to be comprehensible. Identify the site (do all three have the same problem?)

Also note that this is for the category listing page, not the categories sidebox - two completely different things.

Can you point to a particular category where this applies? I haven't seen any that have both description and image.

Do you have the image and description floated left or right? Divs will not sit side by side unless they are floated.
