I see some with cool templates on there shopping cart & would like to do the same. How do I do this without effing everything up ??

If the templates are for Zen Cart, you might be ok. Just beware of Template Monster (and their resellers) templates.
There are free templates available for Zen Cart. You can see them in action at http://(sorry, site offline)/
