gjh42, Yes, its very old, but the problem is that the guy who helped me set it up originally (now long gone) edited background files when I think new user files should have been created instead, which meant that when I later tried to update the version of zencart lots of the customisation disappeared - so it was easier to leave it as the old version which basically worked fine ... and although it looks like a shop it is mostly just a catalogue. Is your advice to upgrade anyway? Thanks.

Yes, an old version like that could be hacked to put spam/phishing links in, or otherwise mutilated, even if no sensitive information is handled. You will have to upgrade someday, as some older versions of ZC will not function at all on the newest PHP/MySQL servers. You can look around the forum for more info on this impending danger.

Also, you can compare your files to a fresh set of the same version from Sourceforge so you know what changes were made to core files. Then you have a shot at merging/adapting those changes to a new version.

OK I think I understand what you mean ... but to clarify, you suggest I download both (from Sourceforge?) the latest version of zencart and the same version as I currently use (which is what?), and then run a file comparison program (such as?) to spot what changes were made to my old version, and then to try and find equivalent places to change in the new version?

That's basically it. I can't tell exactly what your existing version is, but from the stylesheet date I would guess v1.2.4 or 1.2.5. You might download one of those and look at the changelog to find what files were changed, then look at your site to see if they match. Try a newer version until you find that the changelog files are not dated accordingly.

Do you still have a /docs/ folder in your site? That should have version info.

Also, your admin may have a section under Tools for site info. Not sure how long that has been included (it has been improved over the years) but it may tell you what you need to know.

I think its 1.2.6 (2005) by looking at the DOCS folder, and there's no "site info" under TOOLS.

What file comparison utility would you recommend?

Winmerge is good and free; many here recommend Beyond Compare from Scootersoftware (paid). I'm sure there are others.
