Default Customers either can't download files or downloads are corrupt,

I went thru Softaculios and let the do an update, from 13.9F to 13.9G on the 12th of February. I have updated this way for over a year. After the update my customers started sending me message's that the were getting a message about cookies need to be enabled, and some who could download their purchase said the file was corrupt. Last Wednesday I went back and installed the back up that was done before the update. Thinking this would solve the problems. Same thing happened. I have to email all of the zip folder to them and they can open them with no problems. I spent the entire day Friday replacing every zip folder in the store. And made sure there was a green light every where. Today I have been told, they either can't download the files or they are corrupt, and even her words "I click download and then get a Protected mode message and when I say yes let it open then I get that it is not compatible with Windows. " I am at a loss of what could be happening. I spent the weekend searching the forum for an answer to this. Can anyone give me a hint of what to look for to fix the problem? They are getting these message on new files and files that have worked just fine for over an year.

These "auto-update" systems will - at some point - break your site in almost all instances where file customisation (essential for all custom templating) has been performed.

The "auto update" is simply a technique of replacing the files of an older version, with new files - and it is done indiscriminately. It does not have the "intellectual capacity" to judge whether it should keep custom files. It just overwrites everything.

It's like driving a bulldozer into your sitting room to re-arrange the furniture.

Unfortunately there is no easy recovery from this damage. The only way to restore previous behaviour is to roll back by restoring a previous backup. (I trust you did make a backup before you got Softalicious to march into your code?)

You need to make a backup of the database (or better still, clone a copy of it), then roll back the whole system (files and database) after which you can try pointing the file system to the copied database (done by editing your configure.php files). If this works, you will at least not lose data that may have been captured in the time between your "upgrade" and the point at which you roll back.

During all these procedures, you should set your store into maintenance mode so that no further data is written to the database (eg: cutomer registrations, orders, etc).

Simple moral... don't use an auto-update function - it has been stated not to do this on this forum for many, many years.

Problem solved. It was my fault. I can tell you what to not do and that is don't mess with the Optimize Website in your C-Panel.

    Thank you.

Thanks for posting back about the matter.

Can you be more specific about what specific optimization settings you were messing with? It's not uncommon for people to ask the same question as yourself regarding corrupt downloads, and being able to see what exactly they need to undo in their hosting service settings would be helpful for those who read this discussion in the future.
