How did you import your products? Are you using an addon for the category sidebox?

Subcats with subcats do not display in the sidebox; even when a subcat with subcats is clicked in the center column category listing, its sub-subcats display in the sidebox, but it does not.
Subcats without sub-subcats display in the sidebox as normal.

Something about the categories sidebox mod involved (which makes nested <ul> lists with no class/id) is suppressing these subcats.
