Default Extremely slow page loads on MediaTemple...

    Hey all,

I was wondering if someone could take a few moments to peek at my site and perhaps help me figure out why it is running so unbelievably slow. The page load times are hitting 10s+ at times.

I've got Google Page Speed and have been working to up that score, but honestly I've got an 81/100 right now and feel like my site is running way slower than it should be in it's current state.

I've put in a support request with my host, and they've just told me to use Yslow and pingdom.

    Any ideas would be appreciated.

Edit to include URL (whoops!): alexasroom.ca (ALERT: Beware of adult content)

    Cheers,
    Ravyn

Hosted with GoDaddy, right? Search the forum and you'll see tons of similar complaints. The BEST and QUICKEST solution is to use a real host, not GD. Read the threads.

After playing with Yslow and Google Page Speed, I get a score of 92/100 and 91/100 respectively. I'm not sure there's much more I can do to up these scores as they're looking for a CDN, which I don't think I should need to pay for to have a functional speed for my site.

I assume then that it's my host that's the problem, though I had thought Media Temple was a solid hosting provider. I'll go to them with these scores and see what they say.

Better to go right to the source.

Admin > Configuration > Logging : Display The Page Parse Time - true

Then look at the Home page, bottom. You will see the load times for PHP and mysql.
If PHP is slow then problem is with Apache.
If mysql is slow then mysql is slow.

Either way, if one or both are slow on a regular basis it could mean you are on an overloaded server; in which case asked to be moved to another.

Thx Rob.. but what is an acceptable Parse and Query time?

Parse Time: 2.648 - Number of Queries: 400 - Query Time: 0.47823110662842 is the reply I got, but it took probably 6s for the page to show up and display that info.

    Loading a Category Page showed:
    Parse Time: 17.047 - Number of Queries: 653 - Query Time: 11.421947548843

    Product Page:
    Parse Time: 16.885 - Number of Queries: 317 - Query Time: 10.420014122696

Reloading the same pages and I get:
    Parse Time: 6.776 - Number of Queries: 653 - Query Time: 4.4527974710083

    and

    Parse Time: 6.399 - Number of Queries: 317 - Query Time: 1.2489319985046

The parse time is the amount of time to build the page, calculate any info, and output it for display, including any query activity.
The query time is the amount of the parse time that was spent just waiting on the database to respond.

Your query times are unacceptably high, suggesting that the server's mysql engine is poorly tuned.
Add to that that your parse times are also significantly high (even after subtracting out the query time portion), suggesting that your server's overall performance is weak as well.
Maybe it's not got enough RAM, or has way too many users on it versus the hardware's capabilities.

    Thanks Dr and Rob,

I was about 90% sure it was a host issue, but wasn't completely comfortable with my own coding/knowledge of the custom and supported mods I've done to my site to rule out it just being something silly that I had missed along the way.

I'm looking into a new host now and am going to see how that fairs for my sites stability/speed.

    Cheers,
    Ravyn
