Question on Meta Tags

I am running into some issues setting up meta tags for individual products and I would sure appreciate some help in this.

When I put in Meta Tag keywords on an individual item within a category, the keywords I have set up for my home page are automatically added to the keywords I enter for the individual product. If I don't enter any keywords in the individual item, then it just uses all of my category titles for the keywords. Is there any way I can set up keywords unique to the individual items without it adding in the keywords from my home page?

The keyword holds no value what so ever on SE.
