I just finished installing zen-cart (latest version available March 28th,2011) to my host. I then load up the index page

Both in Firefox4 and IE there is a BUNCH of code at the bottom of this page. I have done no editing to any code other then the minimum renaming of admin folder.....

That code is referring to 'smarty'. You haven't tried to use the Smarty PHP templating thing ?
