hopefully this will be a simple edit, when I click through the category I have 3 products displayed and there is a brief text relating to the each product, the problem is the brief text is obviously a snippet of the detailed product description.

Can I edit this so I specify the text in this brief text box or will it always be a snippet of the detailed text?

It will always be a shortened version of the product description. However you can adjust how long that shortened version will be.

admin -> configuration -> layout settings -> Display Product Description (the default is 150)

Thanks, however I can't find Display Product Description in the layout settings, even did ctrl F and search didnt find it on that page, am I missing something, I doubt its down to commercial template?

Thanks, thats got it, problem I have is its picking up the java script 'mouse over images to display product features' I guess I could make that text an image, shame you cant display character 50 - 100 as an example
