which php file has the code for directing which image shows up in the following side boxes: banner_box.php, banner_box2.php, banner_box_all.php

I turned all of the above on in Layout Boxes Controller.

Im getting the same image in a different box most of the time

I would like to designate to each box a set image to display all of the time and for that image not to change.

Use the Banner Manager in your Admin.

You have 2 choices here.

1) as Kim suggested, use the banner manager or 2) add blank side boxes (you can get it here)

Blank side boxes are very easy to customise and you can have as many as you want and put almost any html/php in them.

In your case you would be adding image tags to place you images in one.
