I assume a banner ad is simply a banner that has a link to a product or website in it?

And while I'm on the subject of banner ads, how does one get ads applied to their webpages? I mean, do the advertisers come to you for ad space or what? Is it worth it to clutter up a website with ads? Is there money involved in this?
