Default Attribute Check Boxes - How Can I Ensure One Is Selected?

On my store each product is available in different sizes.

For this reason I don't want a price on the product but I want the options (attributes) to show in the description like so:

    Size1 - $99.99 [checkbox]
    Size2 - $89.99 [checkbox]
    Size3 - $79.99 [checkbox]

So each size has a checkbox and the customer can select what they want - perfect!

Problem is they can checkout with no box being selected, so the cart shows 1 item priced $0.00.

How can I ensure that at least one box is selected before the customer can add to cart?

    We,
    ... Attributes, Force to Select

Right now I can add to the cart and not select a color.. BAD. I am automatically linked to the shopping cart with the default color Black, but really I wanted White..

The beauty of this procedure: Is a warning box appears at the top of the page stating they have not selected a attribute color you offer to the customer.

Example of what it should look like in the Option Value Manager:

(Add the following Option Values below)
    1. I used color as an example: Use the option name value you would like:
    2. The 0, 10, 20, 30 are sort orders below

    Please Select Color 0
    Black 10
    Brown 20
    White 30

Now in Attribute Controller for the product with this Option Name Value:

    1. Add, Please Select Color to product, sort order 0
    2. Associate the flag properties to Please Select Color
    3. Under Attribute Flags: the colored boxes
    4. Yellow box, Used for Display purpose only: Click Yes
    5. Tan box, Default Attribute to be marked selected: Click Yes
    6. Add, the following black, brown, white also with sort orders, and leave the flag properties to default (do not touch)

Thanks haredo, I don't know if I'm doing it right but it didn't work.

See the attached screenshot of my attributes for a product. I created a read-only attribute named "Please Select Size".

I can still select nothing and click 'add to cart' and an order of $0.00 is created.

    Hi
I'm hoping you might be able to help us.
We are in the process of getting our heads around options / attributes.
We've loaded part of our catalogue and have sorted out the attributes for "size" using Easy Populate. The problem is people can add to cart without selecting size.
I can see from your posts above (and others) how to change to make the "Please select" display only and that forces the selection of a size before they can add to cart.
But this seems to be only for one product at a time.
Eventually we will have several thousand items to manage and cant realistically do that manually.
I've tried copying attributes to a category but that copies to all products in that category which is not the correct result.
Any ideas if there is a short cut to do this ? ie copy the display only nature of the "please select" text ?

Thanks for your help - this is driving me mad !!

Add the "Please Select" default/display only attribute to a dummy product, then in Attribute Controller, click the "copy to CATEGORY" button at the top and select the category and "Ignore and add only new attributes".

Many Thanks, that worked - saved a lot of hair pulling.
The only problem I have now is that I have some items in a category that dont have the attribute (for size) as they only come in one size and now they have a requirement to select an attribute that it doesnt have. I've deleted to get me back to where I started but at least I now know how to do it.

Is there a way to copy only to those items where the attribute exists?
    Thanks

The only way I can see to get around that is to add an attribute as "one size only" to all products using easy populate, that way every item has the attribute, but it does seem to add a further thing for a customer to have to do and I'd rather not if I could avoiid as it does seem a little ott.

Not really. Depending on the proportion of products that should and should not have the Please Select, it may be easier to remove it individually from products that don't need it, or add it individually to products that do need it.
