Issue with Categories Box

Hi all,

I have been searching this forum for this issue but didn't find anything yet, maybe someone could help.

I want my category box to show by default the Main Categories and the first level sub categories. Possible? Do I need to do coding or is there something in the Admin area? Thank you for any help.

I believe that a 3rd party add on might assist
Search the free software add ons, link above left, for "better categories"

I tried it "expanded category" mod from here but it doesn't help cuz it shows all subcats, regardless on which level, but I need only first level subcats. also the expandex categories mod has the prob that it also shows disabled categories. CSS Categories is not what I am looking for
