Free shipping changes product weight to 0?

I have a product, weight 1 lb, that has "Yes, Always Free Shipping" enabled. I've noticed that when I that product is in the shopping cart, the weight shows as 0 lb. Is there any way to override that? I'm guessing I'll have to edit the PHP but I'm not sure where to start.

The weight is an issue because I want the customer to be able to decline free shipping and select another option, like USPS Priority Mail for example. However, USPS can't take an item weighing less than 6 ounces so the USPS (paid) options will not show on checkout because the product weight has been reset to zero. Any thoughts?
